Oasis de verde: Oasis of Green

Our air conditioned, third floor apartment in old town Seville featured an open, communal,
ground floor courtyard. The entrance is shared by all the building’s residents and is typical of buildings in this part of the city.
From the moment I first laid eyes on the arches and monster-like pot plants I knew that I would feel very much at home in this place.
It was this feast for the eyes and soul that would greet we sweaty, weary wanderers upon entering the building’s iron gate as we returned from another outing, enjoying (or should that be enduring!) the stinking heat, chaos and adventure of downtown Seville.
I was attracted to painting this scene of cool greens and soft greys sitting harmoniously with the terracotta that is synonymous with this part of the world.
But, again, beneath and beyond the colours and form it was more about the voices and feel that the scene emparted, which I have interpreted to give the painting a very Seville feel
